Language Proficiency Endorsement (LPE)
The language proficiency assessment is designed to reflect a range of tasks undertaken by pilots but with specific focus on language, rather than operational procedures. The assessment should determine the applicant’s ability to:
- Communicate effectively using standard R/T phraseology;
- Deliver and understand messages in plain language in both usual and unusual situations that necessitate departure from standard R/T phraseology.
There are two methods of determining the level of English language proficiency of a candidate:
- Basic assessment: for candidates without a pilot license (ab initio trainees).
- Normal assessment: for candidates applying for an instrument rating, or for the revalidation or renewal of an LPE level 4 or 5, i.e. candidates with operational exposure or R/T experience.
